If you perform official duties for the Federal Republic of Germany abroad, you may be issued an official passport by the Federal Foreign Office under certain conditions. Depending on the activity, you may receive a diplomatic passport or a service passport.
The Federal Foreign Office (AA) issues official passports. Official passports are diplomatic and service passports, as well as temporary diplomatic and service passports. An official passport serves as an identification document for border crossings.
Official passports are issued to persons who represent the interests of the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) on official business. Depending on your professional field, you can apply for a diplomatic passport or a service passport. A temporary official passport is only issued in individual cases if you need the official passport immediately and can justify this to the AA.
If the reason for issuing the passport no longer exists, the passport must be returned to the Foreign Office.
If you receive an official passport, you can still be issued a passport, a temporary passport or a children's passport.

The period of validity is measured on the basis of the duration of the official task or assignment. The period of validity may not exceed 10 years.
A temporary diplomatic or service passport may not be valid for more than 1 year.

If the application is complete, the processing time at the passport office is usually less than 1 day.
Your application will then be forwarded directly to the Bundesdruckerei. The processing time at the Bundesdruckerei is 4 to 6 weeks.
